Moving to a new country is always a bold and exciting step. For me, relocating from South Africa to Germany to pursue new opportunities was both a personal and professional milestone. As a lawyer and notary, I’ve always been passionate about understanding the diverse ways in which legal systems, cultures, and businesses intersect. Receiving the Goethe Diversity Business Scholarship has been a profound honor, and it has truly enriched my journey in more ways than I could have imagined.
A New Chapter in Germany
Coming to Germany was more than just a move – it was a leap into the unknown. Germany’s reputation as a global leader in business and innovation attracted me, but what truly intrigued me was its growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion. As someone from South Africa – a country defined by its multicultural identity and dynamic history – I found Germany’s commitment to fostering diversity particularly inspiring.
I chose Goethe University because of its global perspective and renowned academic programs. From the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt a sense of belonging and community. The university’s warm and inclusive environment made adapting to life in a new country easier, and the diversity among my classmates created a melting pot of ideas and experiences to which I could immediately relate. The true spirit of Ubuntu was reflected here, too, a principle that carries great value in South Africa.
Learning Beyond Borders
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time in the Goethe MBA (Digital Transformation | Data Science | Sustainability) part-time program has been the opportunity to engage with classmates from across the globe. Each brings unique perspectives shaped by their own cultures and experiences. Whether discussing business strategies, sharing stories over lunch, or working together on group projects, the collaborative spirit here is something I truly cherish.
These interactions have been eye-opening. They’ve helped me see the world from broader perspectives and deepened my understanding of global business practices. Coming from South Africa, where innovation often thrives in the face of challenges, I’ve been excited to share my own insights while also learning from others.
Gratitude to My Mentors, Brandell Turner and Parents
No growth journey is ever undertaken alone, and I would be remiss not to acknowledge the incredible influence of my mentor, Brandell Turner, from TNK Law. His unwavering support, wise counsel, and constant encouragement have shaped my academic and professional aspirations. His belief in my potential pushed me to pursue this scholarship and excel in my studies. His mentorship has been a beacon of inspiration, reminding me to embrace challenges and seize opportunities with confidence. I dedicate this achievement to him and hope to make him proud as I continue to grow and thrive.
I am deeply grateful to my first and most enduring mentors – my mum and dad. Their unwavering belief in my abilities and unconditional support has been the cornerstone of my journey. They encouraged me to dream big, even when it meant stepping out of the comfort and familiarity of home to pursue my ambitions nearly 9,000 kilometers away. Their sacrifices, love, and constant encouragement have given me the strength to navigate this new chapter. This achievement is as much theirs as mine, and I carry their lessons and values with me every step of the way.
World-Class Facilities and Teaching
Goethe University’s facilities are nothing short of excellent. The state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative workspaces, and access to cutting-edge technology have made learning an immersive experience. From the moment I walked into the library, I was struck by how well-equipped and conducive it is to focus on study.
But what truly stands out are the lecturers. Each brings a wealth of expertise, combining theoretical knowledge with practical insights directly applicable to real-world challenges. Their teaching has inspired me to think critically and strategically, encouraging me to push boundaries and challenge assumptions.
A Scholarship That Opened Doors
Being awarded the GBS Diversity in Business Scholarship is not just a personal achievement – it’s a reflection of the university’s dedication to supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds. This scholarship has not only alleviated the financial pressures of studying abroad but has also opened doors to invaluable networking opportunities.
It’s empowering to know that institutions like Goethe Business School are investing in individuals who bring different perspectives and experiences to the table. This commitment to diversity has fostered a rich learning environment where all voices are heard and respected.
Looking to the Future
As I look ahead, I feel immensely grateful for the foundation I am building here. The knowledge, connections, and experiences I’ve gained will undoubtedly shape my professional journey in Germany and beyond. I’m excited about the opportunities, whether in international law, cross-border business ventures, or community initiatives promoting inclusion.
To anyone considering pursuing their studies abroad or applying for a scholarship like this one, take the leap. It’s an opportunity to further your education and grow as an individual. The friendships, insights, and skills you gain will stay with you for a lifetime. This journey has been transformative, and I am honored to be a part of such a vibrant and dynamic community. Germany has become a place where I feel at home – a country that values diversity and embraces the contributions of people from all walks of life. I look forward to contributing to this environment, sharing what I’ve learned, and growing in this beautiful intersection of cultures and ideas.
Thank you, Goethe Business School, for making this journey possible.
