This course studies key concepts and issues in bank management. As a motivation, it highlights current challenges in banks’ business models by analyzing the changes from the era of the financial crisis, the regulatory response, up towards today’s innovation and digitization focus. Based on banks’ business lines and markets, the strategies and value drivers will be discussed showcasing the German banking market in comparison to global champions as an illustration. The course will revolve around key management tools and processes like (i) banks’ governance, organization, and operating models, (ii) value-based management (strategic planning, capital allocation, pricing), (iii) treasury function, and risk & capital management. The course concludes with the current transformation of banks’ business models towards digitization and ESG including a description of bank’s innovation management and collaboration with startups.

Dr. Sebastian Fritz-Morgenthal
Dr. Sebastian Fritz-Morgenthal, a seasoned risk professional, currently serves as Managing Director for Advisense in Stockholm, focusing on risk, compliance, and governance. Previously, he held positions such as Head of Global Risk at Bain & Company and various leadership roles at Deutsche Bank, West LB, and HSH Nordbank. Sebastian holds a Diploma in Physics from Hamburg University and a PhD in Nuclear Physics from Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University Frankfurt. In addition to his corporate career, he lectures at institutions such as Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, WHU, and Shenzhen Technical University, and has published extensively on risk-related topics in academic and industry journals.
