GREEN & SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODELS

The pressing global challenges of climate change, resource depletion, and social inequalities demand innovative solutions. Sustainable business practices have emerged as a powerful force in addressing these issues, reshaping industries, and creating a positive impact on both the environment and society. The course “Green & Sustainable Business Models” delves into the core concepts of developing green and sustainable business models. It furthermore sheds light onto key digital technologies driving and shaping green and sustainable business model development and transformation. The goal for students is to learn how to use business model development tools and sustainability/circularity frameworks to develop novel green and sustainable business models. They will also learn how to leverage digital technologies to help companies increase the agility and sustainability of business models. 

  • Understanding how sustainability and circularity concepts and principles can be incorporated in the development of business models
  • Developing and evaluating green and sustainable business models in their specific ecosystems
  • Carving out the core value propositions and operating models of green and sustainable business models
  • Understanding green and sustainable business models against the backdrop of digital transformation across sectors and industries
  • Understanding how digital technologies enhance the agility and sustainability of green business models
  • Pitching a green and sustainable business model in class developed by student teams
  • Understand product-market fit and how it can be achieved with facilitating tools (e.g., Value Proposition Design, Personas, Customer Journeys, Minimum Viable Products, Experimenting/Testing)
  • Design operating models with the Operating Model Canvas
  • Assess the potential of foundational digital technologies (e.g., Artificial Intelligence) for green and sustainable business models
  • Develop and pitch a green and sustainable business model based on state-of-the-art tools and frameworks (e.g., Business Model Canvas, Value Proposition Canvas, Sustainability and Circular Economy Frameworks)

Prof. Dr. Alexander Benlian

Professor Alexander Benlian is the Director of the Endowed Chair for Information Systems & Electronic Services at TU Darmstadt. Previously, he was at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and declined a 2015 chair offer from the University of Cologne. With two years as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, he now also teaches MBA courses in Digital Transformation Management at Goethe Business School. His research explores digital innovation's impact on business models, workplace transformation, and human-AI collaboration. Prof. Benlian collaborates globally on research and consulting projects and is an entrepreneurship trainer with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). His work appears in top journals, and he consistently ranks among the top 1% of Information Systems scholars worldwide.
