This course addresses the professional intersection where financial theory and practice meet with ethical reflection and standards. On the one hand, high ethical principles and professional standards are essential to well-functioning business practice; on the other hand, making those principles and standards work and turning moral motivation into ethical efficient outcomes is a major challenge in itself. In addition to exploring the main theories of moral philosophy and real-life examples of dilemmas that investment professionals may typically encounter, the course features a general approach to analyze the relationship of ethics and economics in the modern world, which is called “ordonomics”. Based on the ethically relevant features of markets the ethical pros and cons of markets will be discussed transformed into an integrated view beyond any trade-off between ethical and economic requirements. As such it may serve as a clear and principled guideline for professionals.
